I don't think anyone does but...Today has been declared lurker amnesty day! Have you read me but never commented? Do you surf by occasionally? Here for the fic recs? Say hello! You are under no obligation to ever comment or delurk again, but here's a chance to do so in a post just half for that.

Also I think I finally have an unpopular fandom opinion \o/

Here it is: Sherlock Holmes is a god-awful movie. You know that generally I love bad movies - I say YES to giant killer bunny rabbits! YES to mutant shep on the rampage. YES to giant chicken feet of doom!* - but this wasn't even one of the so bad its good kind of films. It was just bad. Let me prove it to you [very very briefly]:
  • This is not a Holmes movie. It's a generic action blockbuster shoved into a period setting
  • Jude Law's forehead is terrifying
That said, I only lasted 35 minutes! Maybe it gets better after that?  Doubt it :P

* Night of the Lepus / Godmonster of Indian Flats / The Giant Claw

[identity profile] dreamersdare.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not a lurker :p

And yes, it was. Although it did make me want to do dirty, dirty things to RDJ (or have him do dirty things to me; I'm not fussy). I don't think I disliked it as much as you though; I liked the characters (edit: bearing in my mind I watched it in isolation from Holmes as ACD wrote him), I just thought the plot was shite. So, possibly slightly better than most of the drivel being spewed out by Hollywood lately.

And no, it doesn't change. It would not have changed your opinion.

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
What! Who let you in on that info?!? :P

*g* I like RDJ and he was fine in what I saw of this, but ARRGGHHH could not get past STUPID STUPID PLOT and Guy Ritchie's 'hey look at what we can do' direction. Don't even get me started on that whole seeing the fight before it happens thing, god that was dumb.

I tried to pretend it wasn't a Holmes movie [because I knew from the EXPLOSION FILLED trailer that it would make me cry] but I failed as I spent the whole time going 'well ACD would never have Holmes do that' *facepalm*

I'd rather watch the Basic Rathbone fights WWII Nazi Holmes films than this. IT WAS MORE ACCURATE!!

Yeah, I'm guessing that too :(

[identity profile] dreamersdare.livejournal.com 2010-02-17 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I worked it out all by myself. I'm super smart like that.

It didn't get better. We mostly listened to the plot reveal at the end with a kind of "riiiiiiiiight. And we were supposed to guess that how?". Ah, yes, the Matrix moments. I thought they were funny, to be fair.

I managed to pull that off - I think because it's been a few years since I've read any ACD. That worked for me when I watched the first LotR film too (and then I made the mistake of re-reading before watching the second *scowls*)

Accuracy? Hollywood don't need no steeeeenking accuracy. They have explosions.

(Incidentally, I apologise for epic comment fail. My life, she is not leaving me much me time at the moment *sadface*)

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you sure you didn't cheat? :P

Maybe the first time...but I swear there were three repeats of it in those first 35 min. UNNECESSARY. Urgh. Also just reconfirmed my suspicions that Guy Ritchie is a talentless hack :)

The illustrated Holmes was one of the first proper books I remember owning. It's so old that its from when Marks & Spencers was StMichaels. I still have it \o/.

LOL. I would do neither. Hobbits = personal ick. But, we've all been there, so I feel your pain!

*giggle* YOU SPEAK THE TRUTH.

(Oh man, don't worry about it! We've all been there. As long as you're good though...!)

[identity profile] dreamersdare.livejournal.com 2010-02-21 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Cheatings not smart if it gets the desired results?

*shrugs* He makes pretty shots. It appears to be his primary (only?) direction skill.

It's strange the things we hold onto sometimes, isn't it? I still have a gollywog that used to belong to my mother, and a number of children's books that my grandmother gave me from when my mum and dad were kids.

It's the hairy feet, isn't it? I have to acknowledge that I still have my dad's copy of the Hobbit, which I stole when I left home and again I think is older than me.

Only when it suits my purposes :D

(Ah, I'll survive. I'm a surviving type)

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
You've got me there!

Meh. I didn't even get that. It was too average. Pretty shots is something Wong Kar-Wai can do. I think its more that he's able to be flashy.

Awwww. I love things like that. I've got a couple of my mums books too :)

Hahaha. Exactly. Nah, I remember having to read The Hobbit at school at just down right hating it. Fantasy is really not my bag. I can never quite buy into it, so I just end up thinking it's daft.

Which is just how it should be \o/

(Yay you!)

[identity profile] dreamersdare.livejournal.com 2010-02-28 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Flashy's a good word for it. I tend to accept I'm going to be looking at style over substance when it comes to his films, to be honest (I have been known to forgive a lot for men looking smexy as well - I actually sat all the way through My Bloody Valentine the other night, ignoring how utterly dire it was, because it involved Jensen saying fuck a lot :D)

Bizarrely, my mum was visiting yesterday *shudder* and asked about her gollywog. I don't think we've mentioned that in years!

My dad read us the Hobbit as a bedtime story when we were around 3 and 6. We loved it, but then fantasy has always been my thing. Horses for courses I guess. I buy into fantasy, you like wierd oriental films :D

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-03-02 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
*g* MBV had a pretty lame script but, for that kind of horror film, I thought the cast and tone of the film was pretty good. It also achieved its purpose, which was simply to give 3d scares (it is not nearly as good a film without that). SH tries to be a lot more then it is and that is partly why it fails so hard.

But, yeah, I sat through Devour...!

Nostalgia FTW \O/.

Awwww. Well then no wonder you like it. I can't remember my parents reading to me...will have to investigate!

MMMMMMMMMMM. Weird oriental films. Oh man, talking about weird ass movies...I think I may have finally found one that reaches even my limits...
http://chud.com/articles/articles/20969/1/REVIEW-THE-HUMAN-CENTIPEDE-FIRST-SEQUENCE/Page1.html

[identity profile] dreamersdare.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it sucked above and beyond the genre. But, of course, I couldn't watch it in 3D (damn that defective eyeball) so that probably didn't help.

I have also sat through Devour. Jensen is pretty. Nuff said.

My parents were big on the reading. And my dad was sick of Peter Rabbit :D

....is that just a cheap excuse for porn?

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-03-12 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, there was 100% difference seeing it in the cinema in 3d. Also Jensen's face on the big screen is a delight! If you add it to any movie experience it's guaranteed to at least move a film to 'watchable' status! GO FACE <3333

*g* As I couldn't remember, I asked the folks. Dad said I said he sounded retarded and refused to let him read *facepalm* and that mum would doze off about three lines in, so I'd snatch the book and read it myself. Precocious much?

I don't quite know what it's an excuse for!!!

[identity profile] dreamersdare.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Very true. Also his delectable bum and the bowlegs :D

I didn't want to be the one to say it, but yes :D I started reading to myself pretty much as soon as I was able to, but 5-6 was a little too young to take on Tolkein, even for me

I'm trying not to think about it anymore...

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-03-22 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
*g* Are you excited about Adam being up north over the next couple of day?

Gah! I need that prettiness back on my TV [or pc screen] already. I think I have Jensen withdrawals :(

Hahaha. Fuck it, we are what we are.

I think that trailer's still lingering...I mean, WHY?

[identity profile] dreamersdare.livejournal.com 2010-03-29 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
He came up north...and I went to Essex. See how far I go to avoid fandom infection :D (On that note and for the record, remind me never to stay with the other half's family again. Hotels exist for a reason)

I watched a backlog of four spn episodes the other day. It was all of the good!

Whether we like it or not.

I'm sorry. My brain-life filter engaged and I have no idea what you're talking about...

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
*dreamy sigh* He's even prettier in person though...

Hahaha. Time with the inlaws? Always stressful. And you opted for 24/7...? Wow :P

YAY. Where are you up to? Have you seen the valentines one?

True.

I think I was still just being weirded out by the Human Centipede trailer. There's not a lot that I will feel icked by in exploitation cinema, but I think that one may just be pushing my limits. it feels very very strange to have that happen O_o

[identity profile] dreamersdare.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
And you're still reveling in your celeb encounter :D

Opted? Yeah, something like that...

No. The last one we saw was...um...we watched the 'there are two Deans in this episode \0/' episode, and...I think the one with the antichrist? The little boy who can wish the world the way he wants? Or maybe the gambling one? I forget now. I have another two backed up though I think. Valentines doesn't sound familiar though

Wrong. Wrong is the word you were looking for :D

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-04-07 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
ADAAAAAAAAAAAAAM <333333333

Hahaha. Is that like 'strongly suggested'?

Ooooh. That's a good one. jensen gets to be doubly great at the whole acting thing! And Misha gets to be very very funny. *g* You'll know when it gets to the valentine one! I think you'll like it :)

Wrong is very true. I'm just frustrated that I have limits y'know? I mean limits outside of odd hardcore porn stuff. I just didn't expect it, especially when you fathom some of the Japanese stuff I've watched and love. For some reason I'm seeing it as a fault in me rather than the film...huh.

[identity profile] verdande-mi.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I lurk and read your journal; probably found my way here after following a link to one of your rec-lists and decided to stay around because of SPN and Jensen and Jared. Or it might have been SGA.

In any case; your J2 rec-lists are things to adore; they’re useful and handy and I’ve made friends with them. :)

And I’m not immune to Adam Lambert either.

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey! *waves* You're a fan of both? I've just been having a mini SGA marathon where I devised my own best of McKay playlist. I really am that uncool \o/

Awwwww. Thank you. They're friends with you too *g*

OH YAY! The Adam thing is strange because I've never flailed over a pop act or reality star before, so it freaks me out a little how he's so awesome he's able to change my tastes! Feel free to flail here anytime :)

[identity profile] boxobread.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen Holmes yet - funny observations though! LOL!

I am a lurker - like to add the odd tidbit here and there though. Truly love your fic recs. Go there now and again when I need to read something juicy or angsty! Lots of fun!

Something about me - hmmmm... Married, dog, two kids, two fish. Like SPN, Star Wars, Star Trek, Gone With the Wind, Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Jared and Jensen (of course) - but totally a Sam-girl, and enjoy long walks on the beach at sunset. LOL! (*giggle* The last one was just for shits and giggles!) Tah, Tah!

Oh, watched Avatar - thought it was good but didn't like the 'Titanic'-like moment at the end though.

Also, didn't care so much for Adam's 'Colonel Sanders' tie look. Not so much. LOL! Gorgeous boy though!

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
*g* Are you planning to?

Nah! I know you :) But THANK YOU its always nice to hear the recs are being used by someone other than me.

Awwww. Two kids! I can barely cope with one cat. Kudos. I like those authors too, but I'm gonna have to go with Emily Bronte as my most read thanks to Wuthering Heights.

Hmmm. I'm going to wait on Avatar. the idea of spending a billion hours with it ar the cinema fills me with dread, so I'm going to see it when it's on the small screen. Loss of the magnificence of the special effects is worth it for smoking and toilet breaks :)

He is GORGEOUS *happy sigh* I liked the weird little bolo thing. I thought it stopped his outfit from being too plain ♥

[identity profile] boxobread.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know Adam could be too plain! Ha, ha! Is that even possible?

I just started watching 'Wuthering Heights' again last night (the one with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon). I was just thinkin' I should read the book again though - it's kinda a weird one.

Yeah, I sometimes have an oops moment when I look at my LJ for story updates an my kids are hovering and I say, "Aaahh! That's not really a pic for you guys to look at!" or "How come they're kissing?" LOL! Too funny! (*nudge* FYI: Mommy's a pervie!)

Tah, Tah! (Saw a fic rec list of movie inspired J2 fics - some of them are f-locked, which is annoying, or others have been purged, etc. How annoying is that!?!!!)

BB

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
*g* Shoulda prefaced that with too plain for Adam!

It is a strange book, with its violence, strange narrative and and strongly colloquial speech, but I love it and the ending with Hareton and Cathy never fails to make me cry!

Hahaha. That must be strange!

Yeah. Lots of people keeping locking up or deleting fic :( It's sad. That's a cool rec list though!

[identity profile] boxobread.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess if there are one's that I really wanted to read you might know another source to find them or something - who knows?

You know it's kinda funny - you'll start readin' a fic and part way through it's either dragging or whatever but you can't stop reading it 'cause it's like a train wreck and you can't look away! LOL! Maybe I'm being mean - these people did after all put a lot of time and effort into their fics and I should just shut up and keep reading, right? Ha, Ha! Not being an author of one myself, I should shut up! LOL!

Whatever... 'How's about Adam?' (*changes subject*)

BB

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
*giggle* YAY ADAM!

Did you see his birthday & holiday pictures? SO PRETTY :D

[identity profile] lovemydean.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello! It's been a while since I commented, if it's okay imma go back to the lurking, teehee...
Love your fics, Love your recs, so keep doing what your doing.

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey you! No worries, but feel free to delurk at will! It's nice to have you here :)

Awwwwww. Thank you.

[identity profile] smileforsale.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 12:54 am (UTC)(link)

Here it is: Sherlock Holmes is a god-awful movie.

OHGODILOVEYOU. I thought I'd be alone in this forever.

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha. You hated it too? *HIGH FIVE*

If it helps, all my RL friends thought it was crapola and none of us have made it to the end! Why did you not like it?

[identity profile] smileforsale.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, aside from everything else, it was so bloody preposterous! I mean, I get that Sherlock Holmes was always verging on the edge of the ridiculous but, honestly. I think I'm just a bit of a Holmes purist! Like you said, though, it was just an action film with pretty, slashy boys in it, under the guise of something great. Did not like it, at all. It dragged awfully, too, I can see why none of you have lasted the distance!

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
...it was so bloody preposterous! <--- YES. THIS!

[identity profile] moorspede.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd rather poke out my eye with a stick than see Avator, block buster movies tend to be sooo bad.

Although, I did rather like the Die Hard movies because action and comedy never fails.

I haven't seen the Holmes movie and I'm not going to because I grew up with Holmes dammit, and I love him.

eeew Jude Law can't act either *nods*

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! How was your QI watching experience?

Yeah. I need the option to turn Avatar off if I'm ever going to attempt to see it. It seems like it would be Sunday afternoon mindless entertainment (that I would probably fall asleep watching). Hahaha - yeah, I think I'm slightly more open to it then you!

They're okay. If the first one didn't have a delightful fake German Alan Rickman in it though, I'm not sure I ever would have made it through...

Yeah. i would not advise it. It will seriously piss you off. Plus you know a film is bad when you & your friends end up agreeing that Jude Law is not the worst thing about it!!!

[identity profile] moorspede.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a lot of fun, strangely enough the only jokes I didn't get were cultural, apparently Saudis (or one in particular?) talk with their fists a lot? I thought there would be a little more political content.

Oh good lord you are difficult to please ;o) I'm not saying I'd watch them over practically any Hong Kong movie including some of Jackie Chan's worst... well, maybe not... On the other hand Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus should be in my mail box today!

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. It's not really political, generally it's far too busy being pretty random or making jokes that Alan is stupid and Stephen is posh and ridiculously smart.

I remember on episode where they were trying to explain 'beer goggles' to Stephen and ended up in a discussion about hoe he's have 'sherry pince-nez' instead. Man, that made me laugh.

Hahaha. Considering what I generally chose to watch, that is blatantly untrue! I have the worlds lowest standards :P

*G* I'd take Mr Nice Guy over Die Hard!!!!!!!!!

[identity profile] x-carnivale-x.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm late to the party, but just commenting to say that your recs are just amazing. You've got some excellent taste, so thank you! :)

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwww. THANK YOU! I'm really glad you're liking them and finding fics to enjoy *high five for same tastes*

ext_56483: (Whistle God.)

[identity profile] xrysomou.livejournal.com 2010-02-22 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I am very, very late to this party, but I wanted to take advantage of the amnesty to say hello.

I've been lurking here a while, mostly for your recs, because they are awesome and because everyone needs some J2 at the end of the day. :)

(May I also say that it is freakin' awesome to find someone else who disliked the new Sherlock Holmes? No-one else will listen!)

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello back. It's nice to meet you :)

*g* That is indeed true! And YAY glad you like the recs.

Oh man! I know the 'internet' loves it, but at least in real life I had all my friends disliking it with me! I can't imagine having no-one that will agree *shudder*. Well consider this a safe space for hating on it :D
ext_56483: (j2 = otp)

[identity profile] xrysomou.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The more I hear about Sherlock Holmes, the more I want to rewatch Without A Clue (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096454/). Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley make everything better. :)

Luckily - or unluckily, it depends - my housemates don't particularly care about SH (being as they're all into Halo, 28 Days Later and other fun stuff). It's my Innerwebz friends who point blank refuse to See The Light.

*sigh* I guess I'll just have to keep trying.

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-02-28 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
*g* I'm going to have to take your word on that one. I have an irrational fear of Michael Caine's hair [it's so straw-like!] so I can't watch it.

It did make me re-watch a few episodes of the old TV series with Jeremy Brett in it though! *sigh* Now that was good Holmes.

Can they say why they think it is a good Holmes movie? The only reason I've seen on the web for people enjoying it, is that it's slashy. Meh. That alone does not a great movie make.

[identity profile] labrat68.livejournal.com 2010-02-28 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I am extremely late to the party, but thought I'd still de-lurk and let you know how much I really, really, really love your rec lists. I stop by on occasion and have been slowly making my way through all of the J2 stories you have listed. It's gonna take me awhile, but I'm enjoying then all immensely. Thank you for sharing. (Did I mention how much I really love the rec lists?)

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-02-28 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwwww. THANK YOU. I'm happy to hear they're helping you attain many a happy fic reading hour *g*. Why, yes, I do believe you did... :P

And I hope you feel free to delurk any time you want to!

[identity profile] walmer92.livejournal.com 2010-03-02 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
So i'm not sure if i'm technically a lurker - of yours, anyway - having just found your journal, but I really wanted to say thanks for your rec lists. I'm going thru a serious J2 period at the moment, and I signed up to do CW RPS recs on Crack Van with about only 3 clear ideas of what I want to post. so thank you, the lists are amazing.

Also, it's so good to hear someone else agreewith me on Holmes. i'm English, and I grew up reading Holmes. The point was that he was cool without being an action hero - he solved crimes with deduction, not hitting things. When I first saw the trailer I was so happy someone was making a Sherlock Holmes movie - and then I saw the whole trailer.

Loads of people have said it's a fun movie, even if it's not real Holmes, but I refused to go see it, and now I'm really glad I did. Thanks for confirming my opinion, and thanks again for the rec lists.

[identity profile] lexzilla.livejournal.com 2010-03-03 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! It's always nice to hear that people like the recs and find them useful. Hopefully our tastes will agree :)

Yep. That's pretty much how I felt until I was watching the trailer and it was all 'BOOM FLASH BOOM' and I was left feeling very apprehensive. I mean, I'm not a Guy Ritchie fan anyway, but I really wanted to give this a chance because I grew up reading Holmes too. As I said to someone else, I can quite happily watch Basil Rathbone's Holmes fight Nazis so surely...but, no.

The detective/thoughtful element was replaced with flashy visuals and a semi-mystical plot. Eurrgghh.

You're very welcome and, again, thank you.
