a little bit of meta and whole lot of rock 'n' roll
I have lots of thought at the minute, so bear with me as this might get a little rambly...
Lets start here. Last night Adam Lambert did a show as part of the Glam Nation tour. And it looked the best concert I'd never been to. For evidence, see these [TRUST ME, YOU NEED TO MAKE IT TO THE END OF HIS 20th CENTURY BOY COVER]:
Boy kissing, girl kissing, #TongueDiving, dirty back-bends, clothes getting ripped and THAT VOICE.
Boy kissing, douchebag cups and THAT VOICE
I know right! HOT AS HELL. The Adam fandom I'm a part of was so damn giddy with glee over his cutting lose like this. It's a performance style we expected from the man who gave us old Burning Man performances like this:
Nothing new, but awesome rock 'n' roll free for all energy that I haven't seen in a long time. LOL and it's really kind of nothing compared to the cutting Iggy Pop was doing on stage decades back or any of GG Allin's antics for fucks sake. It's not even new to Adam, he's been kissing and/or porno licking his bassist Tommy as part of the choreography for the song Fever ever night so far over 40 odd dates.
And yet today I find there's a small portion of Adam fans clutching their pearls. They're insistent that his behaviour is cheap, it makes him inauthentic and means he doesn't know who he is as an artist and that his career will crash and burn. Oh and they also have no sympathy if he catches a disease and can't sing anymore. Huh.
It got me to wondering. Is this a youth thing? Or is it that Adam was part of American Idol [will never not be funny] and they've never experienced anything outside that anemic bubble? There is a reason people say Adam trolled that show :D
And again, when did this notion of musical authenticity become so intertwined with just standing and singing and not putting on any kind of show? Why do they think that is more credible?
It's like we're going back in time to the 50's. As societies are becoming more liberal, are people becoming more conservative? I thought it might just be a lack of pop culture knowledge, but with the internet information is so readily available, cross cultural and immediate. You'd have to be completely un-curious about the world around you not to have picked up smething on musicians past.
I don't get it. What I do get is not liking it because it's not to your taste. But to have seemingly moral objections...?
And if you are a fan of Adam and are active on the internet, I'm gonna presume you know something about who he is onstage and what he likes to do. I mean no fan missed the AMA boys-on-leashes, crotch rubbing, boy kissing performance. So why choose now to ask him not to do what he does? And how can they not realise that not doing this would be more unauthentic for him? And why in the hell would you be a fan of someone who acts in ways that is morally repellent to you? Gah! And OMG THEIR LOGIC HAS ME SPINNING IN CIRCLES WHEN ALL I REALLY WANTED TO DO WAS UNF OVER ADAM AND ALL HIS EPIC HOTNESS :(
*g* This post was brought to you by very little sleep and the letters f and u.

Or is it, as I know I've asked before, that this view has gone out of fashion with so many people?
[*g* I am aware Adam makes POP music not ROCK music btw, but were talking behaviour and attitudes not sound]

Adam is an outgoing personality that enjoys pushing the boundaries. (No Boundaries, you know.) How this still surprises people after AMA, after Burning Man, after the Upright Cabaret, and after he licked Tommy's face six ways to Sunday will never not amaze me.
To quote Kris: That's just Adam being Adam.

LOL at the No Boundaries gag. Always applicable \o/. But yeah, what the hell have they been seeing when they look at Adam? I'M BOGGLING.
I guess it's the same when some fans freak when kris says something a little snarky. I'm a fan, not a stan, but even I know he's a sarcastic little bugger.
*g* Exactly.

Love the 'A' on his vest - too funny when they almost pulled his vest open! LOL! Love this boy!
Oh, and the writhing on the floor - this boy could totally moonlight as a stripper for a living! Meow!

Hahaha. I love his little contradictions. Making out with the crowd and then getting all victorian maiden over his torn vest and the risk of people seeing the nipples. LOL. I love him too. So much awesome :)
The writhing was THE HOTTEST THING. He's so bendy ♥___♥

I read a great article awhile back which talked about the difference between equal rights and acceptance of homosexuality. After researching a lot of questionnaires and other types of surveys, the author came to the conclusion that while the majority of the population (of the US but I'd say it would probably be the same in other western countries) believes in equal rights for homosexuals, they do not endorse the lifestyle. She concluded that while their attitudes to lifestyle were deeply entrenched (by Christian beliefs, for example), their endorsement for equal rights was not and, if their attitudes were to change hard fought for gay rights could be wiped away.
I'm not sure your Iggy example is valid, his audience and Adam's audience demographics aren't (and weren't) the same.
I like that he is getting US audiences out of their comfort zone, who wants to stand or sit beside a bigot, anyway? Concerts cost too much money.

I don't know. A lot has been made of Adam's middle aged lady audience of women 40+. At _ai and hoopla etc, which I think are demographically quite young, they were all WOOOOOOO. At other idol sites, where people talk about their kids, there was more of the 'ewwww' reaction. These are people who would have grown up in that rock/pink era so...
I will say that a lot [not all but a lot] of this reaction was from places where Kris is beloved]
The germ fear thing is just hilarious. I saw on one Adam hating site that he should have gotten their medical histories before he kissed them!!!??!! LOL.
I like it too.
Heeee. Did you see the O__O must have gone commando bouncing balls vids/gifs?

No matter how much we argue for rights, there has to be a paradigm shift of some sort or a long period of time for people to get on board with it being ok for same sex couples to hold hands in public, for example, without the threat of verbal or physical attack. Until then glbt rights are up for grabs.
Yeah, it's great that it is not cool to hate gay people if you are a young person. I haven't read the research in any depth, I hope it's not just a fashion thing.
Igg's audience would never complain about him getting his junk out and flipping it around :o)
God, what ever happened to live and let live? All sorts of people come to concerts and most have one thing in common, that they want to hear the singer. What is wrong with being over forty and enjoying a band/ musician for christ sake. It's ludicrous. I'm sure we'll both be going to concerts in our fifties and possibly sixties (if we can afford it, since I don't think we'll be getting pensions ;o))
I kind of wonder if germ thing may be internalised homophobia from some, gay men are promiscuous, don't you know ;o). Or maybe they may be just slightly jealous that it wasn't them ;o)
omg, I couldn't watch While I've always thought women were beautiful no matter what their shape and size, I had/have more trouble appreciating mens' assets. So, yeah, a little bit scary for me. :o)

I don't know if its fashion. That's probably part of it *shrugs*. I imagine research on our true attitudes would be really interesting (possibly with a side of depressing).
LOL Iggy audience would be all 'HELL YEAH' & 'MORE' which was the reaction of the majority of Adam fans. I just saw velvet goldmine and Ewan McGregors version of doing that is part of what got me thinking about this.
Fuck knows. The internet allows people to be mean and stupid and some just like to take advantage of that. But I completely agree. Why would I suddenly stop liking music the minute I turn 40? Why would the things that excite me now, excite me less then? Its a stupid argument. And so full of the arrogance of youth ;)
Both? It's just weird. Do these people moan about all kissing? I'm thinking no.
Hahahaha. It was fascinating yet so so wrong. I wont gif spam you with it then :P
