What a surprise...here be fic recs

How's everyone doing today? I'm busy being a complete ditz (saying the wrong thing, not being able to spell, tripping over my own feet etc) so if this all goes wrong, feel free to blame my cat. That's what I'm gonna do. *nods firmly*

Adorable ‘awwwww’ inducing fic. Jensen joins Jared for a family picnic where he meets the family and tries to beat a small child in a three-legged race.

Breaking Status Quo, London Calling and Tabling the Motion or Why Hiatus Can Never Be Overrated by raina_at
These stories are made of awesome. There’s something so open and honest about them, possibly due to the fabulous little details peppered throughout which is definitely due to the wonderful writing.  The first story is the slow getting together of the boys whilst Jensen stays at Jared’s Texas home during hiatus, the second is based around the two of them at a press junket in the U.K and the third brings them full circle and back to Texas. “The bar's almost unbearably hot, and who the hell doesn't have air condition in this part of Texas? But Jensen doesn't complain, for three reasons. One, the beer is cold and plentiful, two, the music is just the right mix of dirty country rock and hard rock of what Jared calls the 'Dean' variety, and three, Jared's shirt looks more like a second skin and his hair is most becomingly mussed, so at least Jensen's got a nice view while almost dying of heat stroke.”

Cute fic where Jared and Jensen go on holiday together. Jared’s eating habits really made me laugh.

Jensen really gets to know his TV brother when they stay at Jared’s grandparents farm. “Jensen doesn't really get to know Jared until they spend some time together during the first hiatus. Sure they spend every freakin' waking hour with each other, getting into the sort of codependent situation that men only admit to in regards to their mamas, but Jensen only knows away Jared. He knows grown up, on his own, presenting himself as he chooses to Jared.”

Schmoopy story where real life and working means they boys can’t hang out as much as they want during hiatus but what time they do have, they make the most of.

You know when you read a story and as you’re doing it you’re aware of your brain savouring each and every word because it’s that original and wonderfully written and you really don’t want it to end? Yep, this is one of those. It’s honestly one of the best J2 fics I’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying. The summary says, “Jensen turns thirty, and things shift. Featuring: one dead hippie aunt, several identity crises, bungee jumping, Jared with sand in his loafers, and one hazy California summer.”

Funny and playful story about the boys sort of flirting over text messages and late night phone calls. So enjoyable.

If We Live To See the Other Side Of This by light_up
Beautifully written story that charts the boys burgeoning relationship. Neither to sweet nor too angsty, this fic manages a perfect balance of emotions. I adore the way the author has written how the boys both need to be ready for it and what a difference it makes when they are.

It Always Seems Like a Good Idea at the Time by joyfulgirl41
Yay. Jared seduces Jensen with his Spanish and his toppy ways. This is another classic story that should be read by everyone because it’s hot and funny and sweet and smart and romantic. “Jensen doesn't have the first goddamn clue as to what he might be saying, but knowing Jared, it's probably something obnoxious, and not nearly as sexy as it sounds. But fucking hell if it doesn't sound like the sexiest damn thing Jensen's heard in his life. Jared's fingers are playing with the hem of Jensen's shirt like that's nothing out of the ordinary, his fingertips skipping across the sensitive skin at Jensen's side, and Jensen is trying to keep from being completely obvious about what a turn-on it is.”

More Than You Know by nutkin
Another wonderful story, this one told entirely from Jared’s point of view. It’s an episodic account of the two boys on a road-trip, filled with both the mundane and the startling just like real life. I also really like the way this story doesn’t skate around real life issues, such as Jared’s obvious love for Sandy and what that means for him and Jensen.

You know that really beautiful black and white picture of Jensen? No. Not that one. The older one where you can see the reflection of the lights in his eyes. Well Jared is on holiday and back home in Texas when Mike emails it to him. This is a slow burning and spectacularly hot story where they’ve thoughtfully included the picture for us to enjoy as well.. “He comes embarrassingly quickly, can’t drag it past three harsh pulls. He feels his back bow and his blood swishes hot and thick in his veins. His dick is as sore as it would be after a weekend in the tight vice of Jensen’s ass with not enough lube, but Jared can’t bring himself to care. His eyes are still fixed on the picture, and his dick, in one sticky hand, twitches as if interested all over again.”

Sweet story where the boys spend a few days lazing around together.

One Thing Jensen Ackles Never Would Have Been Involved In, Had It Not Been For A Spur-of-the-Moment Road Trip, Karaoke, and Jared Padalecki’s Broken Air Conditioner by beingothrwrldly
The title pretty much tells you everything you need to know plot wise, but you should also know that this is brilliantly funny and filled with fantastic lines of dialogue. “Somehow, six days later, they're on a stretch of highway in the middle of nowhere, and Jared's AC has quit working. It's so hot that Jensen has burned himself on the seat-belt buckle three times in the last hour, and this is when he decides that, okay, why did he agree to this again? "God, dude," Jensen says, leaning close to the window. The radio's crackling low, old rock music, and it almost feels like just another day on the set except they’re playing each other’s parts. "You think we could stop at a garage or something? This is fucking torture."”

Sugar, We’re Going Down by lyra_wing
Entertaining story where the boys finally stop dancing round each other, just before they’re about to go their separate ways for Thanksgiving. This is funny and sexy and if that weren’t good enough, it also has the joyous appearances of Mike and Tom.

The Silent Season by finn21
Semi angsty story where Jensen is mad at Jared for going back to Texas for hiatus. Chris Kane makes a wonderful appearance.

Told You ‘Bout Texas (and Liquor and Love) by slashfest
Jared and Jensen have hot (in both ways) outdoor sex. “They were on their last week of vacation before they began filming their thank-God-it's-been-renewed second season of Supernatural. Somehow—Jensen still wasn't sure how, but he imagined it had something to do with a bottle of Jack Daniels, a promise to go horseback riding, and an amazing blow job—Jared had managed to get him to agree to spend the week in Texas.”

Jared breaks up with Sandy, so Jensen takes him on a trip to cheep him up. And, of course, Jensen in no way has any ulterior motives. This is epic storytelling that still has time to focus in on all the small touches between the boys as their relationship develops and changes. The descriptions of Rome are so detailed and vivid, that it feels almost as if you’re on holiday with them. Really great.

Sexy and sweet. Jensen takes Jared to a cabin so he can de-stress following his break-up with Sandy but then things between the boys change...

Who Says You Can’t Go Home by dramaphile
This is an adorable short story full of lazy warmth and sweet familiarity. Jared takes Jensen home with him for Fourth of July family celebrations. “This is home; Momma's cooking and country music on every station and dusty old pickups and cowboy hats and everyone being so goddamn friendly and the way Jared's hand just brushes past Jensen's knee, meaningfully, as he reaches for another beer, and Jensen shivers even though it's probably about a thousand degrees outside."

You Break It, You Bought It, And Other Rules To Live By and When In Doubt Consult the Stars by scribblinlenore
A really enjoyable story in two parts. In the first, Jensen surprises Jared by turning up at his parents house and in the second filthy hot sex ensues. The undercurrent of long denied sexual-attraction works really well and makes it more than simply porn.
