To tide myself over, I've been re-reading some older fics & enjoying lots of new ones, so here's some recs of the things I've read. I know you'll have read them, but I feel like pimping. As per usual, I'll add them to the themed lists.

Better Than Waitin’ ‘Round to Die by ethrosdemon
This is a gentle episodic AU that feels much bigger than its parts. Dr Jensen ends up with wanna-be dad Chris as his neighbour. “Chris has seen this sort of crap before, and he just doesn't know why people do this to their kids. Love is love and all he can even imagine wanting for his daughter is for her to be happy, however that happens. Shit, if she wanted to be a turkey farmer, he'd buy the fucking land and gobblers.”

And Everything Will Work Out Fine by seedyapartment
Things don’t quite go to plan when Jensen introduces Chris to Jared just to watch the sparks fly. Well they do, just not in the way he hopes. Although this is bittersweet, it’s always enjoyable and the Chris voice is just how I imagine him to be.

Spread Your White Sheets Over My Empty House by erin2326
Complicated messy relationship AU where gallery owner Jensen wants photographer Jared but trouble is Jared’s already involved with Jensen’s best friend Chris who is lusted over by Steve Carlson. How will it all go down in this enjoyable read?

This is a mysterious and melancholy AU story that is beautifully written. “Beneath Jeff's boots stood the floor that they'd installed together, years ago, tilting slightly towards the back door with its screen that never kept anything out. Jensen pondered on the difference between this Jeff and the Jeff that used to be; the one from before this kitchen had a floor, before bougainvillea ran wild and coffee percolated in the early morning hours. No, this Jeff was another animal, he was sure. A stranger, Jensen thought, a stranger in a land made strange by the acts of his own two hands.”

A Breath Away From Where We Are by annkiri
Fantastic first time story where you get to follow the long slow-build journey from friends with their own relationships to boyfriends. By taking its time, the story really allows you to get to know all the players and enjoy the evolving nuances of their relationship even more.

Context Is Everything by veronamay
Cracktastic fic where Jared will only talk in movie quotes. Is there anything better than the ‘The Breakfast Club’ being quoted during the first make out session? “"Are you a virgin?" Jensen asks softly, eyes trained on Jared's face. "I'll bet you a million dollars that you are." He feathers his fingers through Jared's hair, trails them down his cheekbone to rest on that pretty bottom lip. "Have you ever kissed a boy on the mouth? Over the bra, under the blouse, shoes off, hoping to God your parents don't walk in?"”

First Fluttering Of Its Silken Wings by dev_earl
Sweet story where the instant attraction between the boys flares into something more. Gets even better when you add in a tattoo and piercing.

Never Gonna Stop The Rain By Complainin’ by conquest
This fic has a great slow-build that perfectly matches the tentative steps Jensen takes to acknowledge what’s going on between him and Jared.

Only Their Hairdresser Knows For Sure by runedgirl
Jared wants them to get to the fucking, but something is holding Jensen back. This is a joy to read. “Anyone working on the set would have had to have been deaf, dumb, blind, numb and comatose not to have noticed that something was going on with their two stars. Horseplay one minute, pissed off the next. Joined at the hip, then reluctant to be in the same room. Some people were starting to get nervous. Some were laying on their shrink’s couches working through anxiety attacks. Some were getting plastered and making mental notes to work on their resumes. After all, the show depended on their chemistry. Everyone knew it; everyone said it. No chemistry, no show.”

The Games Men Play by dark_reaction and miss_begonia
Very funny fic where the boys play ‘gay chicken’ until they realise they’re doing it for real.

We Might As Well Be Strangers by pez_gurl
Everyone knows that tiny kittens are the best things in the world ever! But tiny kittens and J2…awesome. Jared decides to give some fluffballs to Jensen, but then gets jealous of the attention they get. “And he's scaring Jared, especially when Jared comes into his trailer after grabbing his food to find Jensen sitting on his little sofa, laptop in his lap, the kittens crawling all over him as he looks up names on some website meant for parents looking for baby names.”

Amusing and cute story about Jared house-hunting and dragging a bemused Jensen along. “Jared tends to talk and think with the speed of an oncoming truck loaded with about five tonnes of cement hurtling down a steep hill with the brakes disconnected. In between telling Jensen about what his parents had for dinner last week, one-sided discussions about Nike versus And 1 and southwest sauce compared to mustard, and what Harley dug up in the backyard last week and whether anyone will notice that his socks don't match, Jared does happen to say some meaningful, serious stuff. He was a freaking presidential scholar, for fuck's sake; it's not just tumbleweeds and dustbunnies up there. It's just that the meaningful stuff gets lost in translation, squashed in between random facts and ponderings.”

An adorable Jared comforts Jensen after he returns from a not successful coming-out visit to his parents. This is so very sweet.

Short perfect glimpses into the boys’ relationship spanning over twenty years.

Ten Times Jensen (or, how Jared Padalecki is the most unloved boyfriend in the history of the world, ever) by siubhlach
Based on an awesome prompt (um…by me), this fic is so incredibly enjoyable. Jared wheedles Jensen until he agrees to play a game where they each write a list of ten fictional characters they’d have sex with. “The thing about dating Jensen was that handling his boyfriend could be a lot like a military operation sometimes. It needed careful planning and a subtle approach, like a spy mission (which was beyond cool because Jared would have loved to be a spy, like James Bond. He could totally have been James Bond; he’d have made a great Bond. If he was, you know, British). Jared focused hard, schooling his expression meticulously until he knew he had the perfect puppy face firmly in place. Then he looked across the couch to where Jensen was sitting, legs curled up underneath him and nose buried in his latest novel.”

Jensen is wrong when he thinks Jared handles everything so much better than he does and Jared proves this by having an asthma attack when Jensen threatens to put an end to their relationship. This is an immensely cool fic.

Farther Away From Where We Are by causeways
Wonderful story that charms you with its sparkly boys banter, oblivious Jensen and cast of fantastic extras. Sometime after Supernatural ends Danneel finally breaks up with Jensen, so he hides out with Jared while licking his wounds. “It's a little amazing to Jensen that they're still together. A year and a half ago he would have sworn that if anyone was going to make it for the long haul, it'd be Jared and Sandy, but it was pretty clear by the end of filming the fourth season that their relationship wasn't going to work out. And then Jared came out, which really explained a lot about just how many International Male catalogs he had lying around—"I just like the clothes!" only goes so far. So yeah, Jared and Sandy didn't make it, and they'd always seemed like they were going to be a permanent thing in a way that he and Danneel never had. But they're making it work.”

If It Ends Now, Let the Words Remain Unsaid by dev_earl
Spanning the years, this fic follows the boys through their various relationships with women until fate, in the shape of a small child, reunites our heroes. This is an engaging read featuring a kid that’s cute enough for the story but not so saccharine that you’ll want to cry.

It’s Not Easy by elless18
Lovely tale where their kids help see the boys through the bad times and on to something better. “The relationship part of it, dealing with going from costars to best friends to lovers and something more, convincing Jared to take a chance on them, convincing Kripke it wouldn’t ruin the show, convincing their agents it wasn’t the death of their careers, telling their families they loved each other and planned to stay together for a long time (a day past forever), that’s when it got rough. Not always, of course, but 12 years, a commitment ceremony, and three babies later, they still had their off days, off months. Like now.”

Very gay receptionist Jared gets a crush on Jensen, the office accountant, in this charming and amusing fic.

I Taught Your Boyfriend That Thing You Like by trollprincess
Immensely funny and exuberant story where gossip columnist and total slut Jared Padalecki gets his Hollywood action hero, one Jensen Ackles. “See, E! had this break in their TV schedule because ... hell, Jared still doesn't know. The Kardashians had stopped acting like spoiled brainless tarts in public or gotten real jobs or something. Who the hell knew? Anyway, open time slot. And they thought, Hey! Let's do another celebrity gossip show! Except let's not use Perez, let's use that gay guy who's hot and doesn't look like he smells like gym socks and crotch. So they called Jared.”

Keep Coming Around by misskittye
Jensen is a gay vet and Jared is a straight guy with abandoned kittens at the start of this sweet story. Friendships evolve, complications ensue and friends interfere in this long tale, which also happens to be very pleasing.

Listen To Your Heart by elless18
This is well done and features an adorably handsy drunk Jensen. College boy Jared has a thing for his friend Jensen, but Jensen is straight. Isn’t he?

Only Connect by madame_meretrix
This is a wonderfully written story about how Jensen messed up his relationship with Jared and is now realising that he wants to fix it. I really liked the way the both the timeline of the narrative and the point of view changed, seamlessly, throughout the fic and how this complements the central premise that the past can effect the present. Also features a fabulous Michael Rosenbaum.

Paper.planes by aeroport_art
This is a re-write of the authors SPN AU ‘Sky In the Box’. Whilst that fic was great, it somehow works even better as a J2 story. Set in a London university, rich boy student Jared meets architecture student Jensen and its kind of love at first sight, even if the boys do have to overcome lots of hurdles (including themselves) to get it together. Superbly written. “Really, really green eyes, Jared thinks, hands shoved deep in his pockets as he outstrips any passerby with his hurried gait and long legs. He thinks about the color and clarity of them, thinks about the man’s languid accent and lopsided smirk, and the image spins like a reel through his mind until he’s reached his criminology lecture and is weakly shrugging at his professor’s annoyed gaze as he slinks in through the back.”

The Amazingly True Sexual Adventures Of Jared Padalecki by dollydolittle
This is such a funny and delightful story. College student Jared starts talking about his sexual activities to a stranger who he names ‘library guy’. “Library Guy hadn’t said one word to him since Jared had randomly sat down at his table in the quiet section of the library nobody ever used. Library Guy hadn’t even blinked when Jared had started rambling on about getting blow jobs from strange transvestites. In fact, Jared had started wondering if Library Guy was deaf when he didn’t immediately call Jared a pervert and flee the table.”

The Little Deli & Grocery Around The Corner by regala_electra
Engaging fic, full of snarky banter, where the boys run a deli-florist combo place in New York.

You Turn The Jaded Into New by feisty_red (ongoing)
Nail-biting thriller where Jensen looks to get lost in a big city, thinking that maybe he can out run his past. There he meets mechanic Jared who could possibly be his knight in grease-covered armour. This is so delicately written and really creates an intense and pressurised atmosphere.
