Toothbrush on the far left, toothpaste right next to it and the shaving cream on the far right – Jensen learned the hard way not to mix them up. Mechanically, he goes through his morning routine, the tips of his fingers guiding him wherever he needs to be.”

Understated and deft writing combine in this almost melancholy tale of two friends who are on the verge of maybe becoming something more. This is the kind of story where what’s not said, is just as important as what is and everything is more than the sum of its parts.

It starts off as rock star Jensen and groupie Jared, but ends up being much much more than just porn. CrazyMike almost steals the show though.

This fic is full of heart-stopping tension of the will they / won’t they make it variety and well-written and interesting characters including some truly scary original characters. And really it’s the little details, so vividly drawn, that make the au world visible in the minds eye as you read.

In this twisty tale of intrigue and assassins, ex marine Jensen guards actor Jared. All the CWRPS crew pop up in this fic, but my favourite is grizzly Jeffrey Dean Morgan who brings them together.

I don't know what's gonna happen in this fic. Seven chapters in and the two boys have only just met. And yet I can safely say that I love this story. All the characters stand out so well, especially around a sad and semi-broken Jensen.

Beautifully realised story. Jared the sword-swallower meets Jensen who also works at the fair.

An exciting spy-story that’s full of perfect plot twists and turns. The Jared in this story is so three-dimensional, that it’s impossible not to feel along with him every step of the way.

Something Borrowed, Something Blue by belyste

Through the fantastic skills of the author, the loose plot of the mediocre film ‘The Wedding Date’ has been turned into one of the most enjoyable J2 romantic comedies I’ve ever read. Jared hires Jensen to be his date for his brothers wedding. Sharp banter, douchy exes and the Padelecki clan must all be overcome before true love forever can win the day. “He blushes when she explains the company policy to him – “Our escorts provide companionship, but they are not obligated to perform any kind of sexual favours, nor are they permitted to accept any kind of recompense for sexual acts. Any violation of this policy will immediately terminate the contract” – and rushes to assure her he understands. Again with the prostitution really not being a good idea.”

Gorgeously written Vietnam war AU that manages to capture the horror of the situation without ever veering towards exploitation. “Like a pack of discouraged dogs, the squad moved up off the road, jostling and staring, Simmons still shouting. JT stayed. JT was down on one knee in the mud, his fingers to the old man's throat but fuck, he was gone. Half his face was gone and JT's hand was shaking so hard he couldn't have felt a pulse if there'd been one there to feel.”

Spending the Holidays…In Handcuffs by fiesty_red 
I’m intrigued and amazed and excited and about a thousand other things that this on-the-edge-of-your-seat thriller is bringing out in me. Jensen has been kidnapped by a man called Jared.

We’re going to win this thing and if you can’t keep it in your pants, you have to tell him to stay at home.”” And that’s just two reasons why this story rocks. Jensen is in love with his best friend, cheerleader Jared.

Sweet Dreams Remain by dark_reaction 
A raw, but still soft, slice of life fic featuring bartender Jensen and lawyer/customer Jared - their relationship played out through the cocktails that Jensen chooses to make. This is beautifully written.

Adorkable bickering ex couple Jared and Jensen take the lead roles in this J2 remake of ‘Sweet Home Alabama’. So much fun.

Tall, Dark & Not Bad Looking by chash 
Adorable story that will leave you with a big goofy smile on your face. Jared finds himself amongst the twenty-five contestants competing for the affections of Miss Right on The Bachelorette. He does find love, just not with the person he’s supposed to. “Chad has been on his back about his failure to date again ever since he and Sandy broke up. Only when Chad says "date" he mostly means "get laid," and when Jared says "date" he mostly means "have a meaningful connection with another human being that also involves sex." After months, Jared finally got Chad to understand the distinction as much as he's capable of. Which is when Chad suggests Jared goes on The Bachelorette.”

The author makes amazing use of the internet to tell the story of Jared’s band. Fiction mixes with manips, mp3’s, photographs, fake magazine pages and more to create a complete experience. And it’s not a case of all style no substance, as it’s the story that draws you in to care about the rest of it.

Sweet story, where both boys are particularly adorable, that manages to avoid being too schmoopy. “His skin isn’t ruddy like that of all those seasoned principals that Jared’s known — it’s smooth and pale, and his shirt is starched, and it obviously didn’t come from the bargain rack at Wal-Mart. His hair is short with just a touch of gel, and he can’t be much older than Jared. Jared wants to ask how old he is, and where he came from, and how the hell he ended up at Wakefield, but those aren’t things he can blurt out, so he bites his lip while Mr. Ackles putters around the rest of his classroom.”

I really like the style of this story, the way it bounces back and forth between the past and the present. It’s a smart way to tell their epic love story, of meeting as kids and at various periods thereafter, by not giving too much away too soon.

If you’re only going to read one mpreg fic, this should be it. It’s adorable and funny and sad and schmoopy, all in the very best way and watching the relationship develop between Jared and Jensen is a real delight. The story starts when Dr. Jensen does his psychiatrist friend a favour by giving an exam to a man claiming to be pregnant…“"Padalecki." A young man answers. He's sitting on the exam table, wearing the same paper-thin gown all Jensen's patients have to wear. But the thing is, all of Jensen's patients are women, and so it makes sense for said paper-thin gown to have the opening in the front instead of the back like typical paper-thin hospital gowns.”

Entertaining and fun story where washed-up singer Jensen gets a gig as the opening act for touring megastar Jared. A history between the two boys means a rocky path at first, but just maybe Jensen will be able to forgive and forget.

Sweet(ish) little Jared is a chess-playing prodigy thrown into making a wager with Jensen that he doesn’t quite understand. This is superdirtyhot as well as being a really interesting story. “He’d won his first ever game with that board and he still remembered the flushed pride mingled with a rising excitement that had coursed through him at the moment that he’d realised his tactics had worked and he couldn’t lose. Nowadays he won virtually all of his games, the unbeaten junior world champion for the last five years. He’d never admitted to anyone that he would trade in all those victories to experience just another few seconds of that heady accomplishment.”

This remake of ‘Return To Me’ made me all weepy with its poignancy and heartbreak. “Jensen swallowed hard as his emotions at the memory rose up inside him. “I miss you,” he whispered into the night. “But I don’t think you’d want me living the way I’ve been. I know if things were reversed I wouldn’t want you to be unhappy, lonely.” He paused and smiled slightly. “I met someone tonight. I haven’t felt this way around someone since I met you. Maybe that’s a sign, huh? That it’s time?””.

I love the way the author wrote the prologue and epilogue as a fairy-tale wrap-around. Bad things happen to Jensen but they’re softened and removed by having them told in that way. The main story details his recovery from a frozen boy to someone who can be in love. “The wizard meant to kill the prince, but when he looked upon him he was overcome with lust. He resembled the king greatly. With a howl of rage and despair, the wizard forced the prince to lie with him. The prince was untouched and he begged the wizard to show mercy, but the wizard refused to relent. He finally left the prince broken and despairing on the ground.”

This is a gentle and delicately handled tale about business man Jensen falling for Jared, his mentally challenged gardener. Loosely based on the film ‘Tim’.

Two-Spirits by slashboyz
Disgraced soldier Jensen finds his place, destiny and love with a Native American tribe in this richly detailed period piece. The enjoyable series is rounded out by a fabulous supporting-player Michael Rosenbaum.

Jen was scary intense physically, but as far as his psychic awareness went, it was like he just wasn't there. He wasn't used to Guardians. He wasn't sure he liked it. "I didn't," he stammered. "It was, uh." He paused, not quite wanting to look like a snitch on his first day, and suddenly aware that Christopher was now invisible, manifesting a psionic talent Jay had never even heard of.”

Why should he? He waves feebly from his chair and feels a funny little tingle in his stomach when Jensen turns to acknowledge him. When he looks back down to the pool, George is gazing at him with one eyebrow raised and he has to turn away to get his game face back on”

What You See On The Outside Isn’t Always What You’ll Find Within by arabia764 
This is a fantastically crafted story. Set in some unknown period, slavery is slowly being outlawed. Jensen Ackles rescues Jared Padalecki and has a business proposition for him. At its heart this is a love story, but its also brutal, melancholy and messy. The supporting players are all as vividly drawn as the main players and I think what makes it most impressive, is that one of these, who is almost the driving force of the story, is a character that you never even see.

Poker playing championship AU. I love the way this story slowly unfolds with abstract flashbacks and small clues so that it keeps you intrigued all the way through. Also, there’s a poker-playing glossary if you’re as clueless about cards as I am.

A gleeful and charming series featuring neurotic college boy Jensen and his younger more out-going boyfriend Jared. Also features some of the best titles ever. “He thinks about it all through trying to brush the taste of stale beer out of his mouth (he does that for about ten minutes before deciding that his gums will start bleeding before it works), but he still can't come up with a way to ask about the whole love thing without sounding like a girl or a commitment-phobe. And he's pretty sure that in the course of their relationship so far, Jared's thought he's both of those, possibly at the same time, so Jensen doesn't want to encourage him. He just wants to know.”

I really like the way this fic doesn’t put anyone in their usual role. Yeah we’ve got gay boy in drag Jensen, but then we have abusive sheriff Jeffrey Dean Morgan, good guy Chad, psycho Tom and a doesn’t always say the right thing Jared.

Working Out the Tension and Holding Out For More by offtheceiling 
Jensen is a slutty cheerleader with his sights set on new football player Jared. Of course he gets his man. Then they have smoking hot sex.

You Go To My Head by ras_elased

Atmospheric fic set during the depression. The period details are richly evoked and perfectly match the slow burn of the boys’ relationship and the reveal of their stories.

You Made My House a Home by sasskitten and jeyhawk
Sweet story where handy man Jensen fixes up the house that Jared had intended to live in with Sandy.

You Turn The Jaded Into New by feisty_red (ongoing)
Nail-biting thriller where Jensen looks to get lost in a big city, thinking that maybe he can out run his past. There he meets mechanic Jared who could possibly be his knight in grease-covered armour. This is so delicately written and really creates an intense and pressurised atmosphere.

You’re My Heaven by ysbail

After Jensen leaves a mean and possessive Jeff, he rents a flat that may have another inhabitant. A J2 remake of ‘Just Like Heaven’, this is schmoopy and adorable with just a smidge of angst so it doesn’t become too saccharine.

Your Brains Are No Match For My Tractorbeam by chash 
This is a damn awesome story, hilariously funny, endearingly sweet and a joy to read. It’s a J2 version of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ with Jensen as the science geek and Jared as the pretty and popular neighbour he gets a crush on. If you don’t love this, you may be dead inside. “He's a nerd. There's no denying this; honestly, he doesn't want to deny this. His mother will sometimes tell him that nerds are in, in a kind of worried, encouraging way, but that's not why Jensen doesn't mind being one. He doesn't care about being in. He cares about living a happy life, and being a really ridiculously advanced physicist and nerd is an important part of that happy life, because he's validated by getting awards.”
