♥ I was having thoughts this morning about why I'm so excited by Adam Lambert. Mainly, it's because I think his voice is an amazing fucking instrument. But it's also because he reminds of a quote from the late great Bill Hicks. It's over a decade old, but still feels just as relevant when I think about all the shit Adam gets for daring to be himself in this day and age.
Since when did mediocrity and banality become a good image for your children? What do you guys think?
♥ It also led me to think about another criticism that Adam often gets: that he's not authentic. If we really are in that stage of post-postmodernism where 'authenticity' is understood as a return to what is seen as the traditional, then I find it very sad. Not only because it's a tradition that never existed but also because I dislike the implied judgment of authentic being good and inauthentic being the other. It speaks of a conservatism that I am always [naively?] hoping we are moving past.
Yeah...I have no idea why I am feeling so serious today. But in funner news, my DVD of the latest Johnny To film, Vengeance, arrived today \o/

This followed by an astonishing sequence of mimed obscenities; an image summoned up of clean-cut New Kids on the Block fans goose-stepping, giving the Hitler salute and shouting 'Heil! Me too. It's just that some of the criticism he gets is really strange. Like there were people moaning about the cod-piece he wore for Mardi Gras. They were happy to ignore context and be offended because *gasp* he drew attention to his penis. Like those haven't been around forever *rolls eyes*. Also that type of garment was fine in the 16th century but suddenly now its not appropriate? Aaarrggh. The lesson I have learnt is to never ever read comments on blogs.
I guess it's because they can't say anything about the talent that the hate comes out in these random ways...

I think my favourite one is on the Pirate King in "The Pirate Movie". Had such a crush on Christoper Atkins when I was a kid! It's funny cuz all the jokes and sexual innuendos that were in that film completely went over our heads except the totally obvious ones. Ha, ha!
Also, if he was at Mardi Gras, Hello! Women are flashes their boobs and such - get a grip people! Oh well, can't change them all. I think that their overreactions subconsciously come from their discomfort in their own sexuality - Gasp! Heaven forbid we get turned on by Adam Lambert! The horror! LOL! I'm still gonna enjoy the view though - even though I'm a Jared/Sam girl at heart (don't tell him!).

I know! People were dressed in a hell of a lot less so...go figure! i really don't get puritanicalism. Oh yeah! I agree! *g*
