Authors summary: Life on the streets had taught Jensen that everything came with a price. Family was a word that meant the people who kicked you out, religion was nothing more than a free meal, and salvation something that he could buy for ten bucks a hit down on the bad side of town. Scoring had become his full-time job, and finding a safe place to sleep was what he did in his time off. It was only a matter of time until this life caught up with him. Now, strung out and with no where else to go, Jensen finds himself following his feet to a place he never thought he would go--to the home of a stranger who can unfailingly see past Jensen's mistakes, and who can see right through to the good that is still left within him. The challenge is getting Jensen to see it as well.
Comment: I was really captivated by this. The writing is lyrical, without being abstract, and also somehow grounded and visceral. Reading it, you can feel the characters coming to life word by word, drawing you in and forcing you to care. It’s
hard and bleak at times, but there’s a thread of hopefulness at it’s heart that casts its faint glow throughout. “The first thing he felt was the cold air that rushed across him, pulling him out of wherever he’d been—that ocean-sized place, Lala Land, the Kingdom of Nod. It was moving too fast, and he wanted it to slow down, take it’s time so that he could figure it out. Suss out why it was there. But it had moved on, another digression, a train of thought that left the station before he could hop on board and grab a seat. One that faced forward. He didn’t want to get motion sickness.”

Word Count: 50,000
Authors summary: In high school, Jared Padalecki had it all. He was surrounded with rich, famous, beautiful friends and partied with young Hollywood's elite. As if all of that wasn't exciting enough, he used the tricks he learned from his grandfather to become an amateur sleuth with his billionaire best friend, Jensen Ackles, playing the role of trusty sidekick. But when he got in over his head and lost everything he once held dear, he knew that it was time to move on. That was ten years ago. Now he lives the lonely life of a hardboiled private investigator on the streets of Manhattan, and his fabulous past is nothing but a distant memory. That is, until a tragedy forces him to return to California and the world he left behind. Between juggling rabid paparazzi, sarcastic detectives, and a spurned ex-best friend, it's a wonder that he can possibly find the time to solve a murder that has left the city of angels reeling.
Comment: A satisfying crime story that is nicely done, taking its time with the set-up and revealing the flashbacks little by little. It’s framed by evocative descriptions of the cityscape that flesh out the noir atmosphere and make it timeless.

Authors summary: On his first day at work in a new hospital, Jensen finds that his biggest concerns revolve around not looking like a psychotic hobo, deciding which coworker(s) he wants to sleep with, and figuring out a way to stop badgers having sex in his house.
Comment: Loosely based on the TV series ‘Green Wing’, this fantastic fic oddity is hilarious. Full of hospital hi-jinks, drunken shenanigans and foolhardy challenges, it’s impossible not to adore every single moment.

He prays to be changed, to be normal, but when that doesn't work, he embraces his feelings for Jared and tries to find new ways to be faithful.
Comment: Gorgeously written, with resonating descriptions and emotions, this story gives no easy answers and is all the better for it.

Authors summary: Jared Padalecki is an American living in Rome and writing for a celebrity gossip magazine. One night he rescues a stranger off the street who turns out to be mega-star Jensen Ackles, two-time Oscar winner and notorious recluse. Jared thinks he can trick Jensen into giving him the story of a lifetime. Will he succeed? Or will twenty-four hours spent together in Rome change Jared’s life story forever? An AU based on the classic film, Roman Holiday.
Comment: A feel-good, heart-warming romance story. The author does a great job of showing us how a credible bond is formed between the two boys in just one day, accentuated by the beautiful backdrop descriptions of the city itself.

Authors summary: Jared's been adventuring for most of his life. He loves being out on the road with his friends—killing monsters and bad guys, finding treasure, and helping people out of sticky situations. It's all part of being a good-hearted barbarian. Then his carefree life is shaken up by the introduction of a scrawny half-elf wizard called Jensen, who joins them for a quest upon which they will encounter horror, true friendship, and a secret buried deep underground...
Comment: Such a fun, rollicking adventure story. It flies by and then makes you sad to see it end. Loosely inspired by D&D, although you really don’t need to know anything about that to enjoy this, all the characters are recognisable types (but not stereotypes) that you’ll be rooting for all the way. “The first time Jared meets Jensen, he's quite concerned about Jensen's ability to stay alive. Jared has been doing this adventuring thing for a couple of years now, and he's seen firsthand what sort of dangers are out there. Jensen is tall for a half-elf, but he's also really thin, and his skin has that unhealthy, pasty look of someone who doesn't get out in the fresh air and sunlight enough. Jared figures that wizards must be really useful, despite their apparent weakness, because Jeff had been adamant about finding one to join their party before taking on the ogres infesting one of the nearby villages. In the end, though, Jared figured he should just leave decisions like this to Jeff. Jared's quite content just hitting the monsters until they die.”

Authors summary: Jared Padalecki, handsome, clever and rich, has lived almost twenty-four years in the comfort and affluence of L.A., with very little to trouble or upset him, save some unhappy losses in his childhood. With the exception of looking after his father - almost the only family he has left - Jared has few responsibilities to speak of, and he spends his time drifting from one party to the next, unsure what he really wants to do with his life. Along the way, he frequently plays matchmaker to those friends he thinks are in need of his assistance, much to the disapproval of his lifelong friend, Jensen. But while Jared considers himself something of an expert at dealing with other people's happy endings, he's having a much harder time figuring out his own, even when it might be right in front of him.
Comment: As the author puts it, this fic is a ‘shameless co-opting of Jane Austen's Emma’ that’s so delightful and sweet natured, it’s a real joy to read. Sure, there are moments when you’ll want to slap Jared, but these only add to the fun in eventually seeing it all work out.

Authors summary: In his day-to-day life, Jensen is never put first or regarded as anyone with purpose. He works for his dad, lives in his brother’s shadow, can’t keep his boyfriend a priority, and has mostly given up on himself. One magical cup of coffee transports him to the land of Cassidonia, a fantasy land that he can’t traverse on his own. The tale says the Fair Child will slay the monster keeping watch at the unruly queen’s castle, and all of Cassidonia says Jensen’s the one to do it. In this world, he has to decide if he’ll move on without much effort to change his life, or live up to his destiny and save Cassidonia and return it to the rightful rule of the princess-in-waiting.

Authors summary: College is not what Jared had imagined. Instead of happy days with Chad and his friends, there's just Jared - alone in Bumfuck, Nowheresville, while Chad's living it up in California! Lonely and playing too much World of Warcraft, Jared decides to be proactive, get himself out of the socially awkward rut he's gotten stuck in, and find himself a roommate. But moving in with easygoing and laidback Jensen, Jared's about to discover that real life doesn't always turn out the way you expect it to!

Comment: A story that perfectly captures the internal freak out/loneliness thing that happens when you move to a new place and don't know anyone. Seeing a shy Jared come out of his shell, thanks to a budding relationship with an easy going Jensen, feels really fresh in terms of character and it’s great to watch the story play itself out.

Authors summary: In which Jared manages real estate in Heaven and Jensen works as Hell’s attorney in Death Trials. Extreme ambiguity and a distinct lack of beer push Jared to accept a different kind of job in a hotter, more southern locale. The boys meet. Hi-jinks and grocery-stealing in Hell ensue. Featuring saints on book tours, love on trial, after-life bureaucracy, and sin. Surprisingly not as cracktastic as it sounds.
Comment: Totally original. And like the summary states, it may have a crack concept but it has way too much heart and emotion to be a crack fic. There’s some fantastic word-building work here, where you feel like you become familiar with every nook and cranny of the afterlife, but it’s never done at the expense of the characters. They’re just as vividly drawn and interesting and in the end it’s their humanity that will reel you in.

Authors summary: Jensen is not spontaneous. He does not break the rules. He is the perfect example of a good son and well behaving royalty. His cousin, however, is not. When she declared she’s running away because of an unexpected engagement, Jensen followed her to keep her safe. On their journey to find her true love and their joint freedom, they’re kidnapped by the renowned Sherwood Gang of Robin Hood fame. After Robin’s death, the torch was passed onto Jared, the son of Little John. Jensen expected to find a brute criminal in the leader of the Gang, instead of he discovered a hopeless romantic who agreed to aid the royal pair in their quest. Though their relationship begins as tumultuous, Jared and Jensen formed a tentative relationship that blossomed in the Sherwood Forest.
Comment: An epic tale of honourable criminals that harkens to the original legend whilst being completely its own thing. The period details add the perfect flourishes to a story where adventure and excitement is combined perfectly with the tension and romance between the boys.

Authors summary: Jensen Ackles has got the dream job of a former comic book fanboy: the creator of his very own series Small Small World which stars the man who would be perfect for Jensen if only he were real. Little does Jensen know that his world is about to get a whole lot smaller.
Comment: You just know that any story that manages to pull off flying Del Monte peas that talk, and makes them heart-breakingly endearing rather than silly, is going to be awesome. And this is. It’s clever and creative and works perfectly in tandem with the wonderful art that it is based on. “The comic book world tends to be a much misunderstood one. Oh, sure, you have your fans and you have the people who not only don’t judge but out and out tolerate, but, to much of the world, if you like comics and you’re older than twelve, you’re considered just a little bit geeky if not downright strange. Jensen Ackles didn’t care, though. He already knew that he was a legitimate geek. He’d also take strange because, yeah, it was fitting. Hell, at this point, he was probably even just a little bit crazy.”

Jared crouches low, right in Jensen's space, and says, "I've been looking at you for years, Jensen."

Comment: This is one of those delicately and deliberately worded stories where what isn’t said tells you just as much as what is and this soft way of exploring the characters and their world is effective in bringing out the emotions in the reader. A gorgeous story about two guys being in a relationship and then deciding to be in a relationship.

Authors summary: It’s not easy being married to a superhero. In fact, as Jensen’s learning, it’s nearly impossible.
Comment: The domesticity of this is pretty unique and it gives the story such a great starting place to take off from. And it only gets better from there. There’s a time shift narrative that means we really get to see the development of their relationship and also how it contradicts and contrasts with their current married state. It should be cracky. It’s not. But it works. And you come away from it feeling like you could genuinely understand how it feels to be in their shoes.

Authors summary: Jensen Ackles - part time photographer and part time shit kicker - is waist deep in his best friends’ break downs and drug dealings; in dyslexic musicians and disabusing ex-boyfriends. If that’s not enough, he meets Jared Padalecki –a young, breakthrough actor with a bestselling movie to his name – who, awkward but earnest, strives for Jensen’s affections. The safe and sheltered life behind his camera isn’t enough, now, and Jensen’s set to become the star of his own show – whether he’s ready or not.
Comment: Stylised and slightly off-kilter, this has its own rhythm going on but its one that marches exactly to the tune of the characters sturm und drang, working only to enhance the story.

Authors summary: Recently divorced, successful landscaper Jensen Ackles thinks he's moved into the house of his dreams. Jensen's friends and neighbors are convinced he lives next to a ruthless and reclusive killer, but the more Jensen learns about Jared Padalecki, the more convinced he is that the rumors are wrong. But would he bet his life on it?
Comment: Great premise that really builds upon the mystery and creep factor to keep you engaged. “The house next door has certainly seen better days. The wood looks old, cracked and dry in places, its color so faded that Jensen's not sure what shade it started out before melting into a grayish brown. “Maybe no one lives there,” he says. “Maybe that's why it looks so bad.””

The Tragedy of Life by [livejournal.com profile] lizzywinks
Written for [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang
Rating: NC17
Word count: 54,000
Authors summary: The only luck Jensen seems to be having lately is bad – he's accidentally come out to his family and been disowned (sort of), had his lyrics stolen by his best friend (now ex) who he last saw sipping champagne on an episode of CMT Cribs, and is one late rent payment from being thrown out on his ass because apparently no one wants to buy insurance from a guy with an eyepatch (don't ask).
But things finally start to look up when he meets his hot new neighbor, Jared, and of course that's when Jensen has to go and get himself killed. Turns out the afterlife? Not all it's cracked up to be. And his death coach is kind of a douche, too.

Comment: Singular and satisfying, this is a fic where the bits that are meant to be funny are actually funny, the bits that are meant to be sad are actually sad and so on and so on. It all pulls together to create something fresh and surprising as well as thoroughly engaging.

Authors summary: Five years ago Jared Padalecki ran away to Hollywood from small town Texas and made it big. With an Oscar nomination and Genevieve Cortese for his fiance the only thing that stands in the way of his happy ending is Jensen Ackles: his husband back in Texas who refuses to give him the divorce he wants. Going home Jared finally has to face everything he left behind, including the shock that his husband has been holding on to their marriage out of hope, not spite. Jensen forces Jared to confront the reason why he left and he has to come to terms with the fact that everything he told himself about his husband and why he left was a lie. That he's still in love with Jensen.
Comment: Very loosely based on the film Sweet Home Alabama, this is a heck of a lot more engrossing. The deliberate pacing gives the reader the time to get to know the characters, allowing for expectations to be played with before a slow reveal of Jensen's mysterious ways and the real reason that Jared left are provided. The supporting players, from family to friends, feel really well drawn and make the images of the small town come alive.

Comment: A fic that shows how gradual the process of growing into yourself, and coming to terms with your identity, can be. It’s excellently done, messy and raw without ever succumbing to melodrama, and watching Jensen’s journey is truly absorbing. “The architecture flashes by, old buildings in brown or gray, all covered over with graffiti. Each one is a little different from the others, all different colors, names, symbols. Tags, Jensen thinks they’re called. The sky is gray, the stone is gray, even the inside of the train is gray, but the tags are brilliant flashes of blue, orange, yellow stripes. And Jared’s married, a thought that's been all he can think about since it's happened. He wonders which part of the color metaphor that’s supposed to be. Trains always make him queasy.”

Authors summary: Fresh out of school with a degree from the University of Washington, Jensen meets and falls for Jeff Morgan. He may not know what he wants to do with his life, but for the first time since leaving Texas, he feels like things are coming together. Jeff seems like the perfect guy, right up until it all falls apart, and Jensen is left wondering where he went wrong. A couple failed relationships and a few years later, Jensen's decided that one-night stands are preferable to dates. He's got his friends and his roommate, Sophia, for everything non-sex related, after all. Until Sophia decides to move in with her boyfriend and Jensen's stuck trying to find a new roommate. At Sophia's insistence, Jensen meets Jared Padalecki and the two become fast friends. Only, the more they get to know each other, the more obvious it is that there's something there. But Jensen is unwilling to risk losing Jared's friendship for the possibility of more. Unfortunately, if he doesn't get things figured out, he might lose Jared anyway.
Comment: Long, involved and with a fantastic ending, this is a story that I could have stayed happily in a lot longer. And that’s saying something considering its epic length. The slow ease, and friendship, underpinning Jensen and Jared’s relation was a joy to watch unfold, helped along by a truly likeable supporting cast and a perfect blend of humour and heartbreak.

Authors summary: Set between circa 1919 - 1924. Takes place in Texas, Arkansas, New Orleans, New York, and Chicago. It's the jazz era, and Jensen is traveling the road from place to place, discovering the music of the era as he travels.
Comment: Working the perfect contradictions between tender and terror, brutal and beautiful and hard and heart, that the author makes something so poetic and also so visceral is testament to the fantastic writing here. It’s a story that you can picture clear as day, whilst still maintaining a dream-like atmosphere. Exquisitely done.

Rating: NC17
Word count: 5100
Authors summary: In which Jeff is James Bond, Jensen is his Bond girl guy, and there are sharks with lasers on their heads.
Comment: Perfectly and wonderfully ridiculous.

I'll add these to the main lists next week.

LOL that's because you spent time reading Dean/Castiel fics :P

Hee. True! And, omg, lisztfuls fic is sooooo good. I think you're really gonna like it!

gypsys is still, by far, the best lambliff bb but these was cracky fun: http://community.livejournal.com/lambliffbigbang/12400.html and i really enjoyed rivers_bends :DDD

Not to mention Sam/Dean and Misha/anyone heh. At Least I'm still reading J2, I haven't read a Sam/Dean for ages and it doesn't look like I will soon unless they are AUs or everyone is raving about something.

Yippee! I can't wait. lisztful is up next. I've been reading a Dean/Castiel series (emotional porn rather than sex, which I tend to prefer, and really, really interesting plots and characterisation) which is amazing but so incredibly long. Usually, I get bored with the really long ones which tend to peter out to nothing, but this one. Man.

wenchpixie's looks great! Thanks for the rec :o). My fic queue is humungous!

yay! rivers_bend comes through again :o)

Is that Richard Ayoade in your icon? He was perfect in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace :)

Oh yay! It's such a good feeling when you can sink your teeth into an epic fic. I'm trying to remember the last story I happily lost a huge chunk of time to...The ones I recced from big bang I guess. That's far too long ago.

And why *whines* are there no 80K epic Adam fics? Someone needs to get on that!

Heeee. you'll never get bored \o/

Yesss! We, of course, didn't get the show you are referring to. I know him as Moss in the IT Crowd, which makes me squirm uncomfortably for the main part but which I have an affinity for. :o)

Yeah, how dare they. AND it has to be good as well. We don't ask for much hmmpfff.

The best episode of the IT crowd was the one where they were at some theatre and then Moss ended up in a wheelchair. Still makes me chuckle.

Exactly :P

You're welcome! And I really did! I was so geniunely impressed with how you turned a porn trope into this whole huge AU that was so perfectly contained within itself. LOL I could ramble at you for a while about that :)
